Performance Rankings
The fastest USB4 external SSDs ranked by read/write speed. Compare 40Gbps interface performance and real-world throughput.
USB4 delivers up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth, rivaling Thunderbolt 4 for external storage. These drives push the limits of what's possible over a single USB-C cable, delivering extreme throughput for professional workflows.

Fastest USB4 External Drives ranked by sequential read speed. The Corsair EX400U USB4 leads at 4.0 GB/s, with 1 drives within 5% of the top speed.
Benchmarks show the Corsair EX400U USB4 at 4.0 GB/s reads and 3.6 GB/s writes. USB4 provides the bandwidth pipe, but the drive's controller and NAND determine how much of that pipe fills.
Thermal throttling is a real concern past 2 GB/s. Drives with full metal enclosures or dedicated thermal solutions maintain peak performance longer than slim plastic designs.
To hit the advertised speeds of USB4, your host must support 40 Gbps over USB-C. Many 2021-2023 laptops ship with 10 Gbps or 20 Gbps ports only — the Corsair EX400U USB4 is a good example of the performance at stake.
The cost-per-TB of high-capacity external SSDs has dropped but still exceeds HDDs by a factor of 2-3x. Factor in your speed requirements before committing to a terabyte-class SSD.
| Drive | Read Speed | Write Speed | Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corsair EX400U USB4 | 4.0 GB/s read | 3.6 GB/s write | USB4 |
| Corsair EX400U 1TB | 3.3 GB/s read | 3.0 GB/s write | USB4 |
| SSK PM510 USB4 1TB | 3.2 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | USB4 |
| Sabrent Rocket Nano XTRM-Q | 3.0 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | USB4 |
| OWC Envoy Pro FX 1TB | 2.8 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | Thunderbolt 3 |
At these speeds, enclosure material matters — anodized aluminum helps passively dissipate the heat generated by sustained 40 Gbps transfers, while plastic enclosures may throttle sooner.
