Performance Rankings
The fastest Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB4 (40 Gbps) external SSDs ranked by speed. Professional-grade bandwidth for creative workflows.
Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and USB4 all share the same 40 Gbps bandwidth ceiling using the same Type-C connector. On this site we group 40 Gbps external SSDs into one Thunderbolt-class ranking — each listed drive specifies its exact interface on its detail page, so you can confirm Thunderbolt certification versus USB4 before purchase.

Speed comparison for fastest thunderbolt & usb4 external ssds. Corsair EX400U USB4 achieves 4.0 GB/s sequential reads, with 0 other drives within striking distance.
Interface bandwidth determines the theoretical ceiling, but real-world speed depends on controller efficiency, thermal management, and NAND quality. The Corsair EX400U USB4 achieves 4.0 GB/s reads and 3.6 GB/s writes over USB4 — enough for direct 4K/8K video editing, massive file transfers, and demanding creative workflows.
At these speeds, thermal management becomes a bottleneck. Sustained transfers can push controller temperatures past 70°C, triggering throttling that drops throughput by 30-40%. Look for drives with aluminum enclosures or thermal pads.
Thunderbolt and USB4 drives require a 40 Gbps host port. Standard USB-C ports max out at 10 Gbps, so check your machine's port specs before buying.
Multi-terabyte SSDs carry a significant premium. If your workflow demands fast access to large datasets, the investment pays off. For archival use, consider pairing a smaller SSD with a larger HDD.
| Drive | Read Speed | Write Speed | Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corsair EX400U USB4 | 4.0 GB/s read | 3.6 GB/s write | USB4 |
| SSK PM510 USB4 1TB | 3.2 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | USB4 |
| Sabrent Rocket Nano XTRM-Q | 3.0 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | USB4 |
| OWC Envoy Pro FX 1TB | 2.8 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | Thunderbolt 3 |
| OWC Envoy Pro FX 2TB | 2.8 GB/s read | 2.8 GB/s write | Thunderbolt 3 |
These peak speeds demand a 40 Gbps host port. Plugged into a standard USB-C port, the drive negotiates down to the highest common speed — typically 10 Gbps on older hardware.
