Our scoring rubric rates 6 drives for best external ssd for mac. The Sabrent Rocket Nano XTRM-Q scored 9.4/10, delivering 3.0 GB/s sequential reads.
Form factor matters for best external ssd for mac. The drives in this category offer 2.1 GB/s to 3.0 GB/s read speeds. A drive like the Sabrent Rocket Nano XTRM-Q demonstrates the form factor trade-offs. Pocket-sized NVMe enclosures suit on-the-go professionals, while larger desktop-class drives often include additional cooling or sustained performance features.
Hit these speeds only with a compatible high-bandwidth host port. On a standard USB-C port, expect throughput to settle at the port's own limit.
The Sabrent Rocket Nano XTRM-Q uses USB4, which requires a host port that supports 40 Gbps — verify your laptop or motherboard specifications before purchase.
At 2 TB and above, the cost-per-GB of external HDDs is roughly half that of SSDs. The trade-off is speed versus capacity — SSDs in this tier deliver 10-20x faster access times.
All drives listed are scored against a consistent rubric applied to manufacturer and corroborated third-party data. Prices and availability may vary by retailer.
