OWC Envoy Pro FX 4TB

2.8 GB/s Read 2.8 GB/s Write 4TB Thunderbolt 3

8.9/10

4TB of Thunderbolt 3 storage in an aluminum unibody barely larger than the 1TB. The Envoy Pro FX 4TB is a niche-of-one — buyers typically pay the premium for video editing workflows where 4000 MB/s sustained links plus 4TB of room actually matter.

8.8/10

The 2TB Envoy Pro FX keeps the same small unibody of the 1TB but scales the die stack. The sustained write behavior on the 2TB stays pegged at 2800 MB/s well past 500GB on a Thunderbolt 3 host.

Frequently Asked Questions

What OWC external SSDs do you recommend?

Our top OWC pick is the OWC Envoy Pro FX 4TB, scoring 8.9/10 in our rubric for its 2.8 GB/s read speed, 4TB capacity, and 3-year warranty. If raw speed is your priority, the fastest OWC drive we track is the OWC Envoy Pro FX 4TB at 2.8 GB/s. If you need room for a media library or backup archive, the OWC Envoy Pro FX 4TB carries the most headroom at 4TB. The full lineup, ranked by our scoring rubric, is listed below.

Are OWC external SSDs reliable?

Yes. The 3 OWC drives we track all carry manufacturer limited warranties of 3 years, with endurance ratings spanning 600 to 2,400 TBW (terabytes written). At a typical workload of 50 GB per day, even the lowest rating in that span holds up for many years of daily use before reaching its endurance limit. OWC scores consistently well in our rubric's build-quality and endurance weighting, which is why its drives generally rank above competitors at the same price tier.

How much do OWC external SSDs cost?

Pricing scales with capacity and interface tier rather than brand alone: a 500GB OWC drive is typically a fraction of the cost of its 2TB or 4TB sibling, and USB4 or 20 Gbps interface models carry a premium over USB 3.2 Gen 2 equivalents of the same capacity. The OWC lineup we track spans 1TB to 4TB. Rather than quoting a single price that goes stale, each listing below links to the live Amazon price and stock status — SSD pricing moves weekly, so the retailer's page is the only accurate current figure.
